With all software packages of even moderate size, the process of building the product from code and packaging it for distribution involves a great many steps, any one of which can "break the build". The challenges for the CM / Build Manager are to script the entire process so that it goes from beginning to end without error, and to be able to identify the source (and solution) to build problems when they occur.
