Severity

Severity indicates the relative impact of the problem to the user. It may be correlated with a given set of Symptoms, but is primarily intended as an independent gradient of the nature of the problem.

Warning: do not add more severity values in an effort to hold new meaning. Instead, use the Symptoms field.

Severity 1

An unavoidable problem, which makes the entire product inoperative.

  • The installation Fails
  • Abend (Dr. Watson, Blue Screen, product/system hang),
  • Critical loss or corruption of data.

Severity 3

An avoidable problem which affects a function of the product. 

  • Can use majority of function or has workaround
  • Obscure Abend or hang
  • Minor performance degradation.
  • Significant technical deficiency/inaccuracy in documentation.
  • Minor usability problem.

 

Small

Severity 2

An unavoidable problem, which renders a function unavailable to the user/customer. 

  • Prominent functional Abend or hang
  • Major performance degradation
  • memory leak, major usability problem.

Severity 4

  • Misspellings
  • Bad grammar
  • Cosmetic, style, or format issues
  • Minor technical deficiency/inaccuracy in documentation.
